Malaysia’s sovereign wealth fund Khazanah Nasional on May 24 priced a dual-tranche senior bond offering totalling US$1.5 billion, comprising of a US$750 million wakala sukuk for five years and a US$750 million conventional bond for 10 years. The issuance represents Khazanah’s first US dollar rated sukuk and conventional bond out of its newly established US$5 billion multi-currency sukuk issuance programme and US$10 billion euro medium-term note programme through its wholly-owned special purpose vehicles.

The Republic of Indonesia (RoI) demonstrated its commitment towards sustainable financing when it priced its inaugural blue bond as part of its fund raising in the Samurai bond market. The sovereign on May 19 priced a four-tranche offering totalling 104.8 billion yen (US$745 million), which included two tranches of blue bonds – 14.7 billion yen for seven years and 6 billion yen for 10 years. The other two tranches are conventional bonds amounting to 46.9 billion yen for three years and 37.2 billion yen for five years.

There was a healthy deal flow in infrastructure financing in Asia-Pacific in 2022, particularly in the renewable energy, telecommunications and transport sectors. Hybrid renewable energy projects are increasingly being bid out in markets such as Australia, India and Taiwan as they provide longer-duration energy generation or even round-the-clock (RTC) solutions.

Last year was exceptionally busy for infrastructure financing, with project finance teams at major banks working at full capacity on a range of deals from wind and solar power plants to airports, railways and roads. One new category asset that features prominently in The Asset Triple A Sustainable Infrastructure Awards 2023 is electricity connectors, with large-scale financings in Abu Dhabi, New York State, the United Kingdom-Germany and Saudi Arabia-Egypt. More are on the way. As the installed capacity of renewable energy grows rapidly, it makes sense to have power flowing across borders in either direction, depending on wind and solar production and electricity demand at any particular time of day.
